This system started in 1996 in order to "maintain the high-level esthetic dentistry and improve it with the help of dentists with expertise in esthetic dentistry, as well as clinical techniques and experience, thereby contributing to the preservation of heal and welfare of the nation." The basic conditions for certified dentists are "to acquire sophisticated medical technology for diagnosis and treatment in the field of esthetic dentistry, as well as to have capacity to give appropriate advice to other dental practitioners upon request." The Certification Council will receive an application based on the detailed enforcement regulations, application conditions, and application method to examine the qualification. Five-year or older members, who attended the specified congresses and meet the conditions for giving a presentation on some topics of esthetic dentistry, can report on some cases at the meeting of the Certification Council and be certified after an oral examination. Furthermore, they must renew their qualifications by meeting the conditions for renewal through attendance at the Congress every five years and presentation of a paper at the Congress. At the end of March 2005, 62 members had been registered as certified dentists.
